How to ship vinyl?

Have you established a good reputation at HL and got some Sisters stuff to sell or trade with the community? Or are you searching for that elusive ultra rare live bootleg from 1988? Ever had a bad experience with a trader on Ebay? Let us all know here. Outdated threads will be purged over time.

I might be selling some of my stuff in some distant future. But I have absolutely no clue as to how to ship vinyl to the other side of the world. How can I pack them securely, making sure they arrive in the same state as I sent them? What solutions are available? As I never bought vinyl from eBay, I have no experience in this.

If there's already a comprehensive topic on this, say where and help avoiding HL from drowning :wink:

Best way to ship vinyls is by sea...by air it's not really shipping, nor by land.

The way I've done it is, first put the record in a plastic bag, this is so the tape you're gonna use next doesn't damage it. Get 2 pieces of stout cardboard, a couple of inches bigger all round than the record itself (so that way, if the corners get bashed it won't damage the record cover). Sandwich the record between the 2 pieces of cardboard, securing the record-in-it's-plastic-bag against one piece of card so it stays in the centre. Before wrapping in the cardboard you can wrap in some newspaper for extra padding if you like. I think the last records I sent were some Misfits LP's to Hong Kong.

There's the occasional posty that thinks they have to fold a record in double to get it into your mailbox :roll: :urff:

Other than that just a proper cart board envelope would do, I'd say (from my eBay experience)

There are cardboard envelopes you can buy, but the ones I've seen were pretty flimsy plus they don't protect the corners from getting bashed in by a careless postman like my method. Go to your post office and see what they have available.

A very important thing I'd like to add is: NEVER leave the record inside it's cover/sleeve as seam splits will surely happen (which is a nightmare for every collector :roll: :( )...

For more expensive records I'd normally use thick 13"x13" foam sheets if available, or I'd do as Dan does but use 4 cardboard flats (2 on each side), but the obvious downside are the added postal costs ... hope this helps :) ...

I recently received a rare Sisters boot I was hunting for for years in small vinyl pieces. The word "F R A G I L E" was written in VERY HUGE letters on the package...

This is what I usually do: take the record with the white inner sleeve out of the sleeve (like Hojyuu-obi said), put the sleeve and the record in one of those plastic covers in which records are sold at record fairs. Then wrap the whole thing in one or two newspaper sheets. Then take really strong cardboard boxes and put the record inside. That's it.

I shipped records to Eastern Asia, America and across Europe and as far as I know the record reached the consignee in the same condition it was sent.

Although it was a pain to find the record broken I was highly positive surprised by the reaction of the seller: I told him about the desaster and he immediately refunded me for both the record and the postage costs (although I would have been happy with 50% of the money for the record since I have forgotten to ask him to send the vinyl as parcel with transport insurance).
