fencing

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

dont know if this has been posted before, but...
"Our guitarist Rocco Barker used to be a champion fencer at school," he continues, on a roll, "and he found out that Andrew Eldritch fenced too, so he walked onstage during their soundcheck with a leather qiove, slapped it around Andrew's face and threw it down. On a college campus in Leeds there was a big duel arranged by the students. They had adjudicators and proper gear, and it was held in a big courtyard on the Sisters' home turf. Rocco ended up whipping Andrew's arse, and we didn't get any soundchecks after that because he's such a bad loser..."

Thanks, ryan! The incident in question sounds pretty hilarious, but I actually found the obsessive guitar/gear info far more fascinating... Oopsie!  :innocent:

Don't worry, you're not alone. The only annoying part of that article is that Wayne is more known for his trademark sold-body 12-string guitars, not acoustic ones. The guitar he used during his time in The Sisters and for the early Mish stuff is that solid-body called "Drug", unfortunately I have no idea what make and model it is.
I don't necessarily agree with everything I think.

wayne's 12 string has been discussed on here somewhere, i'm sure. isn't it an aria with a custom headstock?

(how the hell did i remember that?)

Thanks for that QB, I'll do a search then. Should've known there'd have been some discussion really, shouldn't I?

That would possibly be an Aria ProII Cobra CR65/12 (narrowly missed out on one of those a few months ago on E-Bay) or an RS 800-12. The latter of those 2 was originally made in 1980/81, which would fit the time about right, can't remember off the top of my head when the Cobra was in production though (and would really like to get my hands on one...and a Vox Phantom with a Vox Rocket headstock instead of the usual one, but I know where I can get one of those).

Judging by the shape (I'm watching Alice from the RHA on You Tube as it's the one song that shows Wayne's guitar the most) it's an RS 800-12, with the original headstock, but with a custom finish as the RS 800-12 was only available in Natural, Oak or Walnut finish and from what little I can make out (thanks to the lighting), looks like only the front of the guitar has been re-finished and a bit of the headstock.

BTW, I like Aria guitars, can't tell can you? :)

What d'ya know, I was right! (Oh dear...does that mean I'm an Aria guitar geek? Will I have to get a specially embroidered anorak?)

Well, they do make damn fine guitars. I've only got 2 at the moment, both ProII Lazer Electric basses (one black and one red). My main work horse is a Hohner TE Custom-XII and I use the one below a lot as well (mine's a 12-string variant, second from the right).
