13 June 1997 - Dublin, Ireland - Red Box??

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

this gig:

http://www.myheartland.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=5867

on the official gigography page this is listed as

13 June 1997
Dublin, Ireland
Red Box

http://www.thesistersofmercy.com/gen/gi ... htm#bottom

but i have poster for it and the venue is "the point"

ie:
http://www.dublinevents.com/dublin-live ... heatre.php
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Point_Theatre

whereas this would appear to be the "red box":

http://www.dublinpubscene.com/clubsvenues/redbox.html

is there any one from dublin, or anyone that went, that can clear this up? the poster i have was given to me by a friend who took it down from outside the venue and she is sure it was at "the point" :|

Was there! The gig was originally supposed to be at the Point Depot then transferred to the Red Box. I think the Point was far too big (holds Les Mis, Riverdance etc) and there wasn't enough tickets sold. Though that's just speculation on my part. But it's a resonable assumption. I didn't find out about the change until I arrived of course, so a quick scramble trying to figure out where the Red Box actually was located was in order.

yep, moved to smaller venue at the last minute, oddly enough the 1990 tour was rumoured to come to the Point but never did, guess we had to settle for Drogheda and Cork. ;D

Venue was changed from much bigger one at The Point (used for grand events in the city -- Eurovision song festival or 1999 MTV Europe Music Awards can be examples of the scale) few days before the widely promoted gig took place -- and yet much smaller Red Box wasn't even nearly filled up with people
If I told them once, I told them a hundred times to put 'Spinal Tap' first and 'Puppet Show' last.

I was also at this, and remember wincing when I first saw a poster up advertising it - it billed the Sisters as "the High Kings of Goth" and if I recall correctly, may even have had bats and moons and such like on it.

Embarrassing. And I've often wondered since if part of the reason for the move from the cavernous Point Depot to the glorified night club that is/was the Red Box was to do with arguments with the promoters.

Probably also explains why they've never been back.

Yeah, that'd be the one.

There's probably an interesting story behind that gig. I remember it as a really good night out - they played an amazing Comfortably Numb/Some Kind of Stranger medlay.

I wonder did they have the contractual anit-goth stance in place at this point or did it partly come about because of posters like your new one Quiff Boy.

Were the 1990 gigs in Ireland not under the name of 'The Speed Kings' and served as a warm up with Mr James for the VT tour ?

I was chuffed when they change the venue. The Point depot is/was truly an awful dump.

Yes and due to the success of More and VT there were supposed plans to return and play The Point Depot around 90/91.

During 1997 there was an absolutely huge poster in the courtyard area of Fibber's. :notworthy:

Problem was it happened to be around 15ft from the ground. But my word, it was nice :von:

Great gig and yeah, it was on the radio that I had changed. The Point has been done up now (and renamed O2) btw. never been in it though. The guy who owns the POD/Red Box also runs the Electric Picnic (or did). He's been in the press as having difficulty paying the Irish equivalent of PRS. And some other issues which are all resolved now I think. Did think the place was pretty packed though when it was moved...
