For you to give feedback to the Heartland moderators. Wish lists, fault reports, etc. You may get an answer, you may not. As in all things, it largely depends on how nicely you ask the people in charge... You're welcome.

yeah, it's not always that great. we have the same problem on heartland...
the automated spammer systems have
real email addresses and are set up to monitor and then activate those kinds of email replies
oh well.
i'll lookout for other mediawiki security plugins.

I had not imagined automated spammer systems were able to do such things without explicitly being directed at a certain page ... hell ...
...
hope you find some remedy soon ...
... until then I will delete the s**t immediately as soon as it comes up ...

Oh, thanks ... I hope so ...
...
anyway: 4 new users and 2 new pages again ...
...
btw, why would an automated spammer system delete the Main Page? And without filling it with spam !? ...

It's Monday ...
...
http://sisterswiki.org/Special:RecentChanges
Funny, the automated spammer system is now editing pages three times ...
All those pages with 0 bytes content can be deleted. I've checked all their links and changed them where necessary ... some lead to error pages anyway ...
http://sisterswiki.org/Special:ShortPages
oh, I'd also like to ask you to rename the "Wiki Home" ...
... to "Main Page" in the left-hand link list again, please ...
...
Thanks for all your effort ...

As this is going on further, and given the fact that apart from me hardly anybody edits the Wiki,
I recommend setting the creation of new user accouts to only possible after confirmation by admin - for some time, not for ever of course ...

yeah, i've been wondering about doing that for a while tbh.
i'll look into how to stop anyone apart from admins editing.

But I want to go on with editing ...
...
There is a setting to allow creation of new user accounts only after request and upon confirmation, AFAIK ... that should do, I guess ...

i've removed all those pages...
(please don't copy links to them in here - it just feeds the spammers and turns heartland into a link-farm, damaging our 'trust' ratings on google & bing)
also, i've added this code from here:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:User_rights
This example will disable editing of all pages, then re-enable for users with confirmed e-mail addresses only:
Code: Select all
# Disable for everyone.
$wgGroupPermissions['*']['edit'] = false;
# Disable for users, too: by default 'user' is allowed to edit, even if '*' is not.
$wgGroupPermissions['user']['edit'] = false;
# Make it so users with confirmed e-mail addresses are in the group.
$wgAutopromote['emailconfirmed'] = APCOND_EMAILCONFIRMED;
# Hide group from user list.
$wgImplicitGroups[] = 'emailconfirmed';
# Finally, set it to true for the desired group.
$wgGroupPermissions['emailconfirmed']['edit'] = true;
that should stop some of that spam, but i'll look into more rigorous settings when i get time.
