I'm vaguely amused that you consider JuJu etc. to be "mid-period Banshees". is the 4th of 11 studio LPs really "mid-period"? Well maybe I suppose.
Personally I'd split the Banshees into three periods; pre-fat-Bob, with-fat-Bob, and post-fat-Bob.
Bob was only on loan to the Banshees for one studio album though, IIRC, whereas McGeoch managed three. So was not the first to hit on the idea of changing guitarist regularly to keep a band fresh - watch out, Ben and Chris !
Going back to JD, the most obvious link between the two bands (ie JD and TSOM) for those not familiar with the Mancunian Miserabilists (if that's not tautological) is that JD used to do a fairly faithful cover of Sister Ray live, a version of which can be found on the somehwat messy posthumous round-up album Still, which also features Dead Souls incidentally.
JD's live version of sister ray is stunning. 7 minutes of shambling god-awful thrashing and wailing... i love it

@Evangeline - in some bootleg recordings, hussey do the 'Shhh AH!' at the end of the initial riff , just like FALAA.
Months a go i've sent a message at Dominion Mail List about how butthurt Wayne can be about the sisters, and how Evangeline it's the (mediocre) mish version of FALAA, just like Wasteland to Marian.

Then again, despite their animosity, both Eldritch and Hussey have reminisced with positive sentiments about some aspects of the FALAA days. Maybe Wayne did the music to Evangeline as a tribute of sorts. It seems too blatant for a rip-off.

i alway used to find it a bit too spiky for my tastes, but latterly (see what i did there? ) i have a fresh appreciation for it.
on the subject of the late great John Mcgeoch, 6 music recently did an hour long special, covering his work from Magazine onwards,
I may have posted this before - but Mcgeogh was so good that his early work with Magazine deserves better recognition and Spellbound (the 6 music prog) is well worth a listen.

a) Re : FOTN. It's hard to find an early FOTN track which doesn't rip off the girls.
b) @Randall Flagg Totally agree about McGeoch and early Magazine - particularly on their classic "punk prog" second album Secondhand Daylight.
c) Re : Sisters and JD. Now that has finally succombed to a Bowie cover, why not a JD one too - Dead Souls would be amazing (and certainly a million miles better than Reznor's version). Can't say that the title would be much help in the "We're not G*th, honest" campaign though

And many, many of the songs after FALAA are re-inventions of the same sisters 'song. Which is the real reason btw why there isn't going to be a new album ever: the man has nothing new to give.

@Gimme shelter - Now exactly equal, take a guitar and try to play Temple in Gimme shelter timing and you'll see how wrong it 'll look.
