Chris Catalyst wants to release new Sisters material

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

Hi folks,

I just thought that I'd bring your attention to this very recent (an hour ago) Twitter conversation between a humble fan and an upstanding guitar player from a promising new band you might have heard of:

- - -

Chris Catalyst ‏@ChrisCatalyst:
This trip is solidifying what's been on my mind for a bit, which is to get back, sort myself out a bit, and write a s**t-ton of music.

Anders Hjemdahl@AndersHjemdahl
@ChrisCatalyst The Sisters @tsomofficial could use some new music... :-)

Chris Catalyst@ChrisCatalyst
@AndersHjemdahl I wholeheartedly agree.

Anders Hjemdahl@AndersHjemdahl
@ChrisCatalyst Happy to hear that... Do tell AE :-) Hope you'll consider a release of some kind-ltd ed vinyl EP+download, all preorders =$$$

Chris Catalyst ‏@ChrisCatalyst 46m
@AndersHjemdahl I would hope that my recent form suggests that i would, of course, be up for that. I can't speak for the rest of the group.

Anders Hjemdahl ‏@AndersHjemdahl 39m
@ChrisCatalyst Here's hoping you'll convince the powers that be. SOM @tsomofficial fans would sign up for triple copies to make it happen.

I wantssss it... I neeeedsssss it...

Chris would (have) always urge(d)to release the new stuff… I wish it had been done really.
Maybe Von has changed the way he thinks about it... and maybe he is more convincible nowadays. :)

I know... I just couldn't help prodding him. Maybe a cattle prod up :von:s rectum is needed.

Well he was so quick to come around, wasn't he?

I just can't see how this knee-jerk refusal to release anything at all can be anything but detrimental to the band. Few bands are in a position to have so many diehard fans who would just jump at a chance to buy anything they put out. No risk, profit guaranteed, fans and band reinvigorated.

Ah well, this is well trodden ground, and goes in circles.

I was just reading that on Tw@tter. Frankly it's brilliant to see the passion! I hope Mr. Chris can keep up the momentum on this...and if it don't happen (sigh) it's clearly not for lack of him trying :notworthy:

wonderful as new product would be i sometimes think it's only the energy and enthusiasm of ben and chris that even keeps the band touring. i know eldritch calls the shots but without such youth and dynamism around him he might just have given up by now. as has been postulated elsewhere the band is obviously not his only income. we'll see....but i'm not holding my breath.

I'm not trying to p*ss on anyones chips here, as I'd love some new material or just the current material recorded in a studio, but I just can't see AE being up for a little EP or a few downloadable tracks. From what I've read and understand in Eldritch-World there'd be no benefit in such a move, that's for bands that want to push their product, and his highness seems happy enough for the music to be in live form only.

Anyway, it were wonderful to see some new Sisters release, and there is reason and issue enough around to draw from. Nonetheless, I guess it were quite an effort and in several aspects for :von: to have a new album realised. No doubt, he could do it, though, if that were what he felt enriching for everybody.

However, I really enjoy to see the Eureka Machines play in Japan, The March Violets in the US or NxN in Sweden ... and to note the insipriation and energy and encouragement and satisfaction they gain from their effort. But there is of course no gain without pain. Remember for example what a s**t load of trouble The Violets had to go through before they had their album released... I think it was well worth it and the result is just great. Or NxN, after years of disturbances, they now release their debut album and meet with interest and appraisal. Or all the effort, the Eureka Machines have taken upon them over the years ... three wondeful albums and plenty touring ... and now they play Japan. Or Chris anyway ... all these things he's been doing for decades in all the bands and projects he's been playing with, not at last for The Sisters... I've hardly ever seen anyone so committed and into the things he does like him. Apart from the first few years, for :von: things looked very different, when it was all at that point. No wonder, he's somewhat reluctant to project anything of any kind, especially, as things run halfway frictionless now and as he might remember what sort of adversity can arise and what sort of difficulty is no doubt awaiting to be tackled. But then again, it could be more enriching than watching Japanese films every day or playing with the kittens. But hell, what do we know ... maybe there are some more enriching things in his life that we are not aware of... ... if not so, there's enough potential challenge within The Sisters for him to never get bored... ;D   ...

Anyway, I'm sure that Chris is going to do what he says: "This trip is solidifying what's been on my mind for a bit, which is to get back, sort myself out a bit, and write a s**t-ton of music." ... :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: ...

AE was keen on releasing the old co-written stuff with Adam a decade ago, for downloading. But for some reason Adam didn't fanzy the idea of releasing stuff on digital media for downloading hence no material have been available except suzanne.

Mr. E. clearly said many times, including last interviews, that he sees no point in releasing new studio stuff, mainly because of financial reasons - money on recording in PROFESSIONAL studio, PROFESSIONAL mixing and mastering, costs of promotion, etc. Also because he can't find rec. comp. willing to spend amount of money that would satisfy he needs and wishes, especially in current world of spotify, youtube, iTunes and illegal downloading. Obviously many he said words about that matter, even opposite, but ... hope dies last?
I respect that view and honesty, so (and yet) i can't see reason why dreams and wishes of hired hands seems to mean so much, here.

Saw the Violets in SF last night (I just happen to be here for work).

You have to respect them. They still look and sound great. It also shows they do it because they love it - they are playing to crowds of around 100 every night.

Then he obviously hasn't done the math properly.

Releasing e.g. a vinyl EP directly to fans, cutting out all middlemen, all preorders, would make him all the money he needs for a professional recording (the price of which has gone down dramatically over the past decades), and then some.

Pro mastering etc is no biggie either.

Not to mention the rather obvious fact that it would provide a much needed reinvigorating for both the band and the fans.

Seriously, there is no financial counter argument to this, quite the opposite, considering the minuscule share an artist gets of sales if he's unlucky enough to be signed to a major label, and how lucky the Sisters are to have such a dedicated following, who would buy pretty much anything that the band put out.

Perhaps a prepaid subscription scheme would satisfy Herr Eldritch's craving for financial security? [/i]

Personally, I think Chris is talking about writing new EM stuff.
Cheers.

What an original theme for a thread.
At least we can blame one of the band this time !
TSOM's USP once upon a time was the drum machine. Now it is the fact that they have not released any new music for two decades (and counting), which any new release would eradicate. As someone would probably say, go figure.

and btw. why vinyl?
Because it's cool.

Also, it's better to sell people something physical, adding value. People can (and will, and should) download all they want, but this is a crafted object that can't be copied. Strictly numbered and limited, of course, poster, etc.

As a SoM fan since 1983, I humbly apologize to you for my wanting to bring attention to statements by a current member of the band expressing support for projects that a lot of fans care about.

I guess we should all just ignore what they say, and limit this forum solely to past statements and activities. Sounds better to you?

Vinyl is snobbish, Vinyl has no point if music was recorded using fully digital technique. But since it's snobbish there is more opportunity to sell it for more money. I-see-what-you-did-there.

and You know, we here are, mostly (not counting famous Germans overoptimism), don't believe a word, unless there are other proves to support claims. and every few months someone here stars here threads like "chance for new alum/singel/EP". so don't get that personally.

Why is vinyl snobbish? As stated elsewhere, vinyl remains the most convenient transport for high-resolution digital recordings.

Apologies, yggdrasil if you thought that I was having a go at you. On the contrary, I am as grateful as other non Tweeters that you highlighted what CC said. My weariness is with the fact that yet again the apparent prospect of new releases is dangled in front of us, never to be heard of again until the next round of interviews the next time they are trying to drum up an audience for a tour.

Absolutely.

Also I wonder, Bartek, what you had done if you had grown up in the "snobbish" times
when vinyl was the only medium to capture and reproduce music at all ... ...
