Chords?

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

I am new to the group but an old Sisters fan.

Does anybody have the chords for SoM songs? I just want chords, NOT tabs - since I am only playing a concert ukulele, not a full size guitar. I've looked extensively online but there are only maybe eight or nine songs actually transcribed in this way.

I spoke to one of the admins about this and they helped me transcribe a couple of others but I'm fairly new to playing so am struggling to figure it all out.

It'd be amazing if someone had a few more songs written out with chord changes that they could post here or email!

Here's hoping that Trump prompts a new album - surely the key objective of any new administration!

Thanks.

Hello oddfinger & welcome to the forum.
There are a few musicians around, so chances are you'll find what you need :)
Cheers.

Chords, what a nice idea :D
That would be a reason enough to bring my synthi and play some again after some time ;D

a minor and then sometimes it's e minor
:lol:

were there specific songs that you wanted? i guess some of them, especially early on, were written around riffs so interpreting them into block chords is a bit muddy but if you learn how to read tabs (or figure out the bass by ear), you can glean a harmony that you like.
but we can try to write chords for you too.

Not at a gig, surely? Not wanting to be the Fashion Police, but wouldn't denim or leather be more appropriate?

So many songs! I guess any of these are ones I think would work on stage with uke...

Incidentally, I can already play Marian and it sounds lush!

How about:-

Lucretia
More
Black Planet
Alice
Body Electric
Dominion
Driven Like the Snow
First and Last and Always
I was Wrong
We Are the Same, Suzanne
Some Kind of Stranger - I think this would be particularly good!

Lucretia is easy only La-Do-Re when in Do glitch from Fa to Re then Fa-Mi-La
only Dynamics in this minimalistic jewel :wink:

Lucretia:
Am -> C -> D

More:
(Based on the main guitar)
C -> F -> D#

Black Planet : i has no idea how to transcribe it in chords, really.

Alice: I guess the same as above.

Body Electric:
Base:
D --> E to F -> A

Chorus:
A# -> C# -> Am

Dominion:
(based on the bass/second guitar)
G -> B -> A#

Driven like the snow:
Geez this song it's as very based on the bass riff, and it's kinda hard to transcribe it as chords, but if i would roughly convert it to tabs would be something like:

Am -> B -> Am -> B -> C -> E9 -> C -> F -> E9 -> G -> B -> A

and if i would simplify it would be:

Am -> C -> E9 -> G -> Am

First and Last and Always:
song veeery based on the main riff, but i guess you can go with:

Base
A -> B -> C (repeat 3x) then -> D -> E

Chorus:
Am -> G -> D

I was Wrong:
I usually don't play this song, and to be honest, i haven't played it almost three years, but i think it was:
B5 -> D -> A -> B5 -> D -> E

We Are the Same, Suzanne
Am -> C -> G -> B

Some Kind of Stranger:
base:
G -> Am -> C -> D
chorus:
C -> D -> C

Lucretia is Am C Dm and it sounds cute if you play the bass figure (F and E notes) over the C and Dm. Like iesus and husek said but we wrote at the same time. :lol:

For SKOS, I'm not sure but I'd write it as G G Am C-Dm in the verses and there are two choruses, the first Dm C and the second Dm C Bb A.
(I think the lead guitar plays Dsus2, Csus2, Bbsus2 and A(addb2 or whatever you call an A chord with a Bb note in it) in the chorus if you want to follow; the guitar doesn't actually play a minor third on Dm but the melody and strings have it.)

Okay I am going to try these and I've just pressed "print".

Nevertheless, you are giving me chords without clear places to change them. You are, of course, being musically literate, and you're forgetting I am a musical retard with next-to-no ability. Write out the lyrics you smart-arsed twats! It'll be f**king golden down the Nest nightclub next Monday.

The chords for Lucretia are the same throughout so if you learn to play just the instrumental first, you'll only need to repeat the same thing the whole way.

Code: Select all

(Am) I hear the roar of a big machine (C) (Dm)
(Am) Two worlds and in between (C) (Dm)

I hear the
(Am) Sons of the city and dispossessed
(C) Get down (Dm) get undressed

And SKOS

Code: Select all

(G~)
    (Am)            (C) (Dm)    (G~)
And yes I believe in... what we had
(Am)           (C) (Dm)
But words come in the way
(G)                (Am)  (C) (Dm)     (G)
And only yesterday... as I was leaving
           (Am)              (C) (Dm)
Lord knows I've tried to say
        (G)
But I've heard a million conversations
(Am)                (C)      (Dm)
Going where they've been before
(G)
Seen the way that careful lingers
(Am)      (C)        (Dm)
Undecided at the door

(Dm) And all I know for sure (C) All I know for real (Dm) Is knowing doesn't mean so (C) Much
(Dm) When placed against the (C) Feeling, the heat inside when (Dm) Bodies meet, when fingers (C) Touch (Dm)
I hope it helps a bit. Writing out whole songs is a lot of work but since the riffs just repeat, you'll be able to learn the vocal timings from the records.

Haha don't worry, it'll be ace. I have a concert ukulele which is bigger and therefore sounds deeper and better.

Thanks for these, it's really helpful. I'll start practicing asap.

EvilBastard, that started well... kind of tailed off, then picked up, before crashing again ;)

Okay everyone, so I have written out the next section of SKOS but it doesn't seem to work properly when I play it. I have only been playing music at all for less than a year, hence big gaps in my knowledge and ability.

Please can you help polish this one up? [see below]

Oh and centurionofprix has a Dm in here but I have been rehearsing without them until "All I know for sure...". Might just be me being simplistic again but it seems to work.

(G~)
(Am) (C) (Dm) (G~)
All of my words are second hand
(Am) (C) (Dm)
And useless in the face of this
(G) (Am) (C) (Dm) (G)
Rationale, rhyme and reason
(Am) (C) (Dm)
Pale beside a single kiss
(G)
And I’ve heard so many things
(Am) (C) (Dm)
I’ve failed to understand at all
(G)
I’d settle anytime for unknown footsteps
(Am) (C) (Dm)
In the hall outside

Come here I think you’re beautiful

I think you’re beautiful

Some kind of stranger come inside

i used to mimic songs i disliked in a george formby stylee to amuse me and my mates and annoy whoever was raving about said song. i stopped when people started requesting songs, having completely missed the point. :roll:

Move it all to major chords: A, C, D - it's bombastic, not mopey.

Ohhhh does make a big difference, thank you. My timing's are still a bit out I think though.

I've been trying SKOS all evening and it sounds great in parts. Probly my fave Sisters song. Lucretia is awesome but I think maybe only Eldritch can carry it off

If minor chords make Lucretia too moody, you could also try just power chords since major chords might clash with the melody and the bass figure if you want to play that, but see what you like best.

pretty and wistful Lucretia sounds good in my opinion, like this one:

(mind that he plays it in a different key: fm, ab, bbm)

Thank you. I don't quite get what power chords are.

Interesting cover, thanks! It really is a tough one to pull off. Maybe I should upload my effort at Marian, 'cos that one's turned out okay I think.

power chords only mean there is no minor or major third in the chord, so if an A major chord has A, C# and E as notes, and A minor has A, C and E, a power chord has A and E alone (and maybe A and E another time in a different octave). It sounds neither minor nor major, that's only implied by the notes around it.
I don't know how it sounds on an ukulele though.
