So damn cold (VERY IMPORTANT FIX NEEDED)

I really like the random featured little lyric thingy on the homepage, but today I saw this and it made me a little itchy - the quote from 9w9 reads "It's so damn cold and it's just not true" ... and that's not the lyric.

Please address as a highest priority.

While you're in there, the diversity of the options seems... lacking? I swear I only ever see the same dozen or so. Not that TSOM have a massive back catalogue but it feels like there should be more. This may have changed at the upgrade but I'm not 100% sure?

Maybe the PRNG needs some lube?

I see, clearly it's me with the "just a dozen". I wasn't expecting many duplicates, but that source list is much reduced from the entire canon.

I tried to avoid more than one lyric from each song, and chose the ones which still sounded cool in isolation

- it looks how many lines are in the file
- it picks a random number between 1 and that number
- it displays the lyric from that line number in the file

however, if folks aren't seeing a wide range of quotes there's a chance the RNG might not be as R as i hoped

i've shuffled the order of them around in text file so hopefully folks will see some different ones...?

in the meantime i'll do a bit of digging to see if something isn't working quite right

I remember trying to code Math.random functions in Flash (don’t hate me) back when and it would ‘favour’ certain positions. Like if I wanted the payhead to go to a random frame out of 20 it would favour the middle bunch, landing on 1,2,3,18,19,20 less frequently. So I had to weight the frames with duplicates on the edges to rebalance. Fuqing math. Fuqing computers. Just do your job you’re a giant calculator.

Look, I'm sure it was my cognitive bias at fault here, not the PRNG. Don't waste too much time on it.

Am in favour of any effort at expanding the list though. I prefer my PRNG in Dwarf Fortress size rather than backgammon size
