All about that bass

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

If you haven't heard it, check out this bootleg.

Good god. The bass intro on Lucretia. The fleshed out guitar sound. The power of ribbons

The variety of sound between tracks. For fucks sake, there's a keyboard player.

I've gone down a little YouTube rabbit hole listening to gigs from this era, and for the life of me, I can't hear ANY keyboards in the mix. Like, they're all low quality bootlegs - I'm not aware of any high quality recordings from this time, but what exactly was Dan Donovan playing? The obvious keyboard-driven track on Vision Thing is More and yet they don't seem to have played that very often as far as I can see?

So what did he do on stage?

[EDIT - I tell a lie. Just listened to Lucretia here and he seems to be singing backing vocals and also playing some basic two note changes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYTITtq54m8}

Not sure if Dan was still happily married to a young Patsy Kensit at that point in 1991. If he was, then I would imagine he spent the majority of his time onstage smiling. A lot

They divorced in '91 so I guess not

Didn't Dan Donovan just press the start button for each song and fill up a bit of the big stage?

Keys become more prominent in '91, think they had a gentle rethink after that first leg of touring. AE looked a lot more comfortable, vocals started to get a bit more variety, Tim started to introduce more noise and dynamics to stuff.
All demonstrated in the greatest gig ever ;)

I could be wrong, but as far as we know Dan Donovan did Tour Thing 1 only (1990).
In 1991 Suzanna Josefowicz took over ... ...

If memory serves me right Me Donovan was at Wembley indeed. It wasn't my fav gig though. I always thought the Sisters sounded better in slightly more enclosed spaces. Just my opinion though and given Von's love of festivals he obviously wouldn't agree!

Wembley Arena was an awful venue, certainly nowhere near my favourite gig, even after a 5yr wait.

Miami, which I believe was the last gig with the PE before the promoters dropped nuts and cancelled the tour, has an excellent sound and Suzanna's keyboards and BVs are very clear (esp on Ribbons). Andreas and Tim are cutting some tasty guitar noises and Tj is really adding something - although I wouldn't wish having to play Lucretia on my worst bass-playing enemy. Sadly they didn't do More:
"We're Hawkwind and this is a song about love." - :von: , 1993

"We will miss them when they are gone" - M. Andrews, 2024

yet listen to Lucretia from reading and James cant play it! as me and Fiendy were saying only the other day...its not exactly "stay clean"
Well I was handsome and I was strong
And I knew the words to every song.
"Did my singing please you?"
"No! The words you sang were wrong!"

Tony looked cool but was far too sloppy at times for my liking. Even managed to fu*k up Dominion at Reading if I remember correctly.
