The star in the logo

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

It might be me and it also might have been mentioned a million times before...but could it be that to the head in the logo the star surrounding it was inspired by THIS? I just noticed today while looking at a copy. https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/4cAAAOSw ... -l1600.jpg

That is something that i cannot answer precisely but by the way you mention the star. One question bothers me, why the star other times is 5-pointed and other times is 4-pointed with obviously missing a point in many cases over the years, and i am not fool to believe that there is no meaning to this ;D
I would suggest to search about the star meaning over the centuries, the fact that it is not massive means that it is "left" ideological symbol but not commie one. Most likely something between H.P.L. and Spanish civil war anarchists :innocent: :bat:

4 pointed or 5 pointed with a point obscured? It's always 5, isn't it? :/

From what I can see, that H.P. Lovecraft book is a fairly recent publication (2011), with new artwork, so it’s possible that it’s actually influenced by the Sisters logo, not the other way around.

(Not that I think it's particularly similar.)

Hell, such motives with head-like figures and a five- or x-pointed star behind are so standard ... while The Sisters logo is unique and derived from those drawings by Andrew White of 1992.

This took me f**king ages to find....answers in the last line.

From a new Australian interview: Interviewer (Adam de Ville): I was wondering with The Sisters of Mercy logo, how did that originally come about? Were there other designs that didn’t make it?

Eldritch: Actually no, there never were any others. Nobody has ever asked me that before, that’s a very good question. We made t-shirts before we made records, before we even did a gig. I thought t-shirts were the key to this, and I have not been proven wrong (laughs).

Strangely enough, there was never another contender. There were a lot of contenders for band names that we didn’t pick, but never a contender for the logo.
How did it come about?

Just from a book of anatomy. I thought it would be good to unwrap the head, peel back the skin and see into the skull.

And the star, how did that come into it?

Because we’re left wingers - always were, always will be.
Well I was handsome and I was strong
And I knew the words to every song.
"Did my singing please you?"
"No! The words you sang were wrong!"

Aha! Never heard the bit about the left wingers. Thank for looking it up, Lee! :)
