as i say, its only half there and the actual structure (ie: verse, chorus, verse, chorus, etc etc etc) isn't correct. it was more just to satisfy my curiosity and see if it could be done.

the curious churchorgan type sound is to mark the places where the vocals should go. tried about 100 different "sounds" to fill that gap and that was the least invasive :roll:

i quite like it so far ;D :innocent:

its pretty laid back, and not having any vocals on it means that its fairly repetitive (as would be the orignal), but hey ho. it didnt exactly take months on a top recording studio... or even days on a cheap one in scarborough. or even driffield. ;) :D

out of interest what are you all using to record your versions? Are they programs you have to pay for, or is there another way to get stuff like that?

i use cubase vst, from steinberg. which one should of course pay for, but which i "obtained" via www.edonkey2000.com

this is a sequencer that allows you to use "virtual instruments" (software which runs in parallell with the main sequencer) to generate the sounds for you.

off the top of my head, i think the vst instruments used on that track were:

drums: native instruments "battery"

I haven't started on mine yet (busy moving house/town), but I'm planning on recording on good old fashioned hardware - a Korg D8 8-track digital studio being the actual recording source.

Drums from my old but beloved Alesis SR16 drum machine, guitars and bass using, well, guitars and bass, and possibly a hint of a yamaha QS300 in the background.

you will probably find that without the vocals its all pretty much the same, but the structure goes a little random on the last third of the track :roll:

i want to get some real bass down over the synth stuff to liven it up a little. make it a bit more organic.

the obligatory SR16 :lol: :notworthy:

i've actually got a set of high quality drum samples from an SR16 so in theory i could create a virtual SR16 kit and use that ;D :lol:

i will provide you with an updated summer soon - its definitely a process of development - a new bassline, than new guitars, and so on....

about the style: i always thought of versions which should be ready to add only the vocals, as indicated by "the singer's turn" - and in that sense the tracks could be more or less related to a style even the sisters could use - but even the sisters used to be an experimental band so in fact i don't see any limitations in sound, style, instrumentation, arrangement or whatever.
for an instrumental to be a good, brooding and listenable track it might deserve more than for a vocal demo - thats exactly the challenge (at least for me) - there is a lot of space for new ideas for old songs...

about recording: as indicated by quiff boy, programs are available in different ways.... ;-)

so everything we do is primarly for ourselves - and if we get results at least some of us do like, its great. if results turn out to be exceptional good, we might decide what to do with the collected works and who should listen to them carefully :-)

...and we still need people to join the procet....

the multiple instances of "absynth 2.0" are to play different sounds from the same piece of software simultaneously. there's probably a better way of doing it so if anyone knows, please let me know! doing like above uses loads of RAM and processor power :urff: :(

done a bit of tweaking - sorted out the structure so its pretty much like the real version (and noticed that it changed slightly between 1999 and 2003), re-eq'ed the bass part and generally pi$$ed about with it.

its now about 4.5mb
