Thing is, Eskom warned the incoming ANC government that they'd need investment to meet future needs.MadameButterfly wrote:This is why things go so so wrong in a country!

Also, South Africa is a prime place to solve domestic electricity problems via microgeneration from solar PV and solar HW. The necessary investment could've been reached if it wasn't for the spending on weapons and a hugely corrupt government.
Not to mention the capacity for wind (onshore and offshore), and wave/tidal, South Africa could be exporting electricity to her neighbours.
I don't necessarily agree with everything I think.

Yes and I agree with what you are saying! The biggest problem is money really and corrupt government stemming from the apartheid years even and the fact that the bigger companies are all owned by other countries!Syberberg wrote:Thing is, Eskom warned the incoming ANC government that they'd need investment to meet future needs.MadameButterfly wrote:This is why things go so so wrong in a country!

So it's been a case of the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer...
No wonder the crime rate is so high, there's still poverty and the rich folk all drive around in expensive cars with weapons on them at all times!
South Africa is not the only country that deals in weapons though, yeah they are made, sold, used by all in S.A. but most are for export.
South Africa and Africa is the richest continent in the world when you just look at the resources found there, natural resources but kept poor by the rest of the world if you want to look at it that way!

At the time of the killing, Mr McLaren thought that Jimi Hendrix had told him his uncle was the devil.

Heh.
I wonder whether there's a case to be made that violent direct action against the whalers could be justified.

Unbefckuinglievable - the only upside is that the little b@stards are being homeschooled and are therefore less of a burden on the state's coffers. And with that large a family, you know the kids will never be short of a date!SINsister wrote:What was that quip about a clown car, again?

Backing for Armed Forces Day plan
Now, let's say it becomes a criminal offence to discriminate against people in military uniform. Does this mean that someone walking down the street in full Waffen-SS regalia should be treated with respect? What about if you strolled around Warrington or down Horseguards Parade wearing black combats, beret, and sunglasses, a la Irish Republican Army (which would claim it was as legitimate a military organisation as anyone else's army)?
A little respect for the army wouldn't hurt - they're doing a job that most of us wouldn't want, and if we want to change what they do then we need to change the government - but an "enforced" respect is never going to work, and this turncoat Labour MP is typical of his ilk in thinking that you can legislate peoples' thoughts.
Ok, fair enough - the military maybe could do with some good publicity for a change. After all, Britain is recognised for having one of the best armies in the field - not the best equipped, perhaps, but in terms of the professionalism of the soldiery it is seen by many as The Kind Of People You Want To Have In Your Corner When The Chips Are Down.Auntie Beeb wrote:An Armed Forces Day public holiday has been recommended by a government-backed study looking into improving public recognition of the military.
The report by MP Quentin Davies also said more state school pupils should be encouraged to join cadet forces.
The 40 recommendations included making it a criminal offence to discriminate against people in military uniform.
Armed Forces Minister Bob Ainsworth said the proposals would better recognise the work of the military.

Exactly how many times do soldiers in uniform get discriminated against? Is it really worth making that a criminal offence?

To not know and to ask a question is a moment of embarrassment; to not know and not ask is a lifetime of shame.
