NIN - Hurt
Crap song when performed 95-2000. But during Trent's rehab, he obviously heard JC's version.
The debut performance on the With Teeth tour (audio, Fresno, 23March05) is controlled emotion (but makes me weep). The debut visual (Philly, 18May05) when Trent is more relaxed (and weeps during his own performance) just adds to the emotion (and makes me weep).
Oh, and "I'll Be Yours" by Placebo.

Eva Cassidy's version of Fields of Gold. If you put it on with me in the room, chances are I'll start crying without even having a reason and being quite cheerful. I've read it has that effect on many people...

A fair few off Disintegration.
Wail Of Sumer / And There Will Your Heart Be Also -Neph (their finest work)
Spring - Rammstein (no idea what it's about, but gets me hot and bothered nonetheless)
Mutter - Rammstein
Why Not Smile - REM
Beat A Drum - REM
Tightrope - Stone Roses
Tears (funnily enough) - Stone Roses
and top of the list, Into The West - Annie Lennox (LOTR - ROTK soundtrack)
Blub.

Real waterbombs:
J.S. Bachs´ Air, played at the funerals of my parents.
Elton John´s Blessed, for a child that didn´t get born.
Thinking about it, yupp. they still work, let´s jump ahead to the special moments.
Walking home massively pished from the final celebrations of my school, singing (Or better burping and howling)
A Night Like This by Cure.
While my schoolmates lay in about every available bush, unable to walk but braying Tote Hosen songs.
A moment with
VNV Nation´s Carbon. I was driving a car transporter, a 7,5 ton wreck that would have fitted into a Mad Max movie, over the A3, Germany´s most frequented motorway, at about half past two in the morning. The street was dead silent, me the only one driving, the landscape pitchblack, only moon and stars.. A gooseskin-moment I´ll never forget!
(Thinking about it, distorted guitars and a heavy Bassline would fit that song..
)
That car transporter had a cute powerfull radio with nicely powerfull speakers. After driving for over 15 hours in a go it played
Alice a bit louder (to stay awake..). At that moment I overtook a US Army Truck near Frankfurt Airport. The driver, a blacky, looked over to me and nodded along to Alice´s rythm, grinning widely..
I had the windows closed and those Army trucks are loud..
A few friendly gestures, and I was past him.
Marian on the channel ferry to Ramsgate at 1:30 in the morning.
And countless more with Sisters songs..
First piano chords of
Black Planet in a fullmoon summer night..
*sigh*

I know it's a bit soft this kind of thing and some people don't like to admit they have emotions, but I was listening to the radio whilst at work and they played REM's "Everybody Hurts". I couldn't usually give a stuff about REM but the line -
REM's "Everybody Hurts" gets me every time I hear it no matter how jolly I feel on that day. And no I'm no REM fan.
One last dance on the dancefloor before setting my wings in flight to Europe over a decade ago, Guns 'n Roses's "November Rain"....*howls*
There are so many more, but will have to make a list, later.

occasionally it is the sheer genius

i would also add technical accomplishment...
or is that covered in emotion/expression, only applying to musicians who are in controll of their instruments?

Songs beside the Fields of Gold cover that can induce extrication of eye fluid or have done so in the past :
The Cure - Trust
The Cure - Letter To Elise
Marillion - The Space (Acoustic Version)
Marillion - The Great Escape
Albinoni - Adagio in G Minor
Mazzy Star - Into Dust
NIN - Hurt
Queensrÿche - Promised Land
Probably some more, but it's hard to come up with them while being at work.
By the way, Dave, I was really surprised to see Wail of Sumer/And There Will Your Heart Be Also on your list, because that song always offers me hope whenever I hear it. Whenever I feel distraught, this song calms me down, it's some kind of balm for the pain i'd be in. Especially when Carl sings "We must suffer to free our pain". But of course, everyone has different emotions related to songs

Last night I was watching the Pink Floyd live in Pompei dvd and the second part of A Saucerful of Secrets is so beautiful... Every time I hear that song, tears well up...
Same thing happens when I listen to Wish you were here, Hurt by Johnny Cash, I care by Derrick Harriott,
Atmosphere and about a hundred soul tunes... Too soft, but never enough.
