If it's someone with a strong academic background (and I mean strong), then Goldsmiths have an excellent reputation and a research rating of 5*, the highest possible, but entry is very, very competitive, and the environment is very, very intense.
Otherwise, the University of East London and Royal Holloway have the edge in terms of their research ratings, but I'd say Greenwich, City and Westminster would all be worth looking at, because they're vibrant sort of places to study with a good international/social mix, although not all these places do 'social studies' per se: some are straight sociology or social policy and administration.
Leeds Met is a broad brush social science course, if that's what you're looking for, although there are options to specialise (and the chance to do criminology as a specialism is a bit more unusual). However, although I think the teaching is good and graduates are pretty employable, etc, they didn't put it in for the last RAE, which suggests the research rating wouldn't be that high. That's not necessarily a problem, because it depends what you want from a course, but if you want cutting-edge theory and the latest wild academic ideas, Leeds Met might not be the place to find them. If you want a broad course which will introduce you to a wide range of subjects and give you the chance to look into one or two in more depth if you want to, it would fit the bill. And they do have good facilities, both in terms of IT access and social facilities like bars and sports grounds (and the swimming pool!) They're one of less than a handful of institutions who are planning to charge less than £3k for many of their courses in 2006, when so-called variable tuition fees come in (which are paid over time, not up-front). This is a bonus if you're paying; some people worry it will give the impression that you got a 'cut-price' degree, but I don't think that many people outside academia are going to know about the fees, let alone remember and be bothered about it once the degree finishes, three years later, and, of course, this is what the Met are banking on...

Had a bit of a work-over so it can try and compete with the above. The late license on Friday and Saturday means those who are too drunk/aggresive find that it's the only place they can drink come 22:30. Makes for an interesting couple of hours

I remember supping outside The 'Rack in the early nineties on the day Leeds were promoted from the second division. A large mob of aforementioned neanderthals
were, not unreasonably, bouncing around outside in a giddy, drunken fashion. Then they started chucking their empties at buses and traffic on Otley Rd.
Leeds buses and cars, full of people from Leeds.
I could always understand the 'competitive spirit' between our clubs being an excuse for aggro, but that was an eye-opener and no mistake. The mind boggled. And still regularly does.
Still, I used to love The Skyrack & The Oak, t'would be cool to mosey up there again.

they're not exactly goffix, but north bar is cool - funky while just staying on the right side of pretentious, and mojo is not bad either (but gets way too packed on a weekend!)
and the rocket bar (at the side of the cockpit) is not a bad drinking venue when they dont have gigs on, though it lacks a bit of atmosphere.

I'm not a huge fan of Rocket bar. North Bar is good, I agree. I don't know if I've ever been in mojo. Where is it again?
The
Wardrobe by the new BBC building mixes a good cocktail
The Lounge near the bottom of the Merrion centre, is good for a Saturday lunch, but gets too full of Nathan Barley wannabes in the evenings.

Is the Angel still full of underage drinkers pretending to be alternative while looking a bit scared of people in leather jackets? Or are Johnston sixth-formers too trendy for that sort of thing nowadays?

Theres a huge difference! I depends what you are after in a city. London is big and busy and cosmoplitan, and getting about is a faff, and theres too many pple. Leeds is quite small and v. quiet in comparison. Unless you have lots of money and are after a fast paced existance, i wud say better quality of life in Leeds, especially if you have kiddies.
