The Jam ~ Going Underground
The Sex Pistols ~ Pretty Vacant
The Clash ~ London Calling
The Rezillos ~ Top of The Pops
B52's ~ Planet Claire
Buzzcocks ~ Promises
The Damned ~ Love Song
...suggests miming. I think it's only in the last five years (help!) that TOTP have permitted live performances. Going Underground was always the vid with the white background and the Pistols never played TOTP. The PV vid was designed purely for that purpose as they were banned from TOTP.

So, all the stunning performances were either vids or mime.

I could be wrong but I have the Nirvana 'Teen Spirit' mime from 91 so guess I'm not. :von:

But some bands mime better than others.
point taken wise sage...except...

The Jam did infact play live in the Studio for TOTP when Going Underground went straight to No 1...something to prove i believe...but it could equally be that they hadn't finished the video in time  :innocent:

@ Burn - And I'll also stand corrected after reading a mini-biog about Sid today:
Mini-biog about Sid wrote:The Sex Pistols travelled to Copenhagen on 13 June (77) for the start of the tour. While away, their promotional video of 'Pretty Vacant' was shown on TOTP, and the band appeared on the programme on their return
That would have been around the 1st/2nd week in July. All I ever remember was the 'live' vid. Destroy long-sleeved cheese-cloth, UK hanky on the head of Mr Jones and Sid in his biker jacket with no tee.

I could be wrong. :?

Fair point about Weller and co.

I thought they performed "pretty vacant" once? (mimed of course)
I saw them on TOTP2 once which would imply that it had originally been on TOTP1 :?

The (mighty)Who got banned from TOTP for playing live (5:15) but using backing tapes for the brass section, which were played by John Entwhistle, their bass player :(

nothing is new. there are no genuinely original bands out at the moment - there never were.

even the mary chain only took the best bits of VU and filtered it through a cheap drum machine and s**t guitar playing.

its always been about finding a few bands with sounds you like and mixing & matching elements to come up with something vaguely "different" to everything else.

in theory, the more sounds you f**k about with and the wider your influences (up to a point) the more original you will sound.

if you just use one or two sources you will only ever sound like a 3rd rate tribute band... witness shed 7 ;)

obviously if you have just way too many influences you will end up sounding very generic. as with all things its a case of "everything in moderation".

i've only heard a couple of tracks by this band but they sound quite cool. they make a nice racket. 8)

Shed Seven

Their lead singer tried to cop off with mrs fiend's sister once in the cockpit:

"I'm in a band, you want a drink?"
"What band are you in?"
"Shed Seven."
"Never heard of you. P!ss off."

:notworthy:

Cheers Fiend, the explosion of laughter that was wrung from my body just snapped the back of my chair.

I resent that! They had their moments, not many admittedly but Dolphin is a damn fine tune.

...and the drummer is a FoF.

Massive following at the early T in the Park festivals too, for some reason.
