As this forum (and much of the Internet) is conducted in written language, surely it is an aid to communication to attempt to use the language in a proper manner? While deliberate ambiguity is the goal some seek from their writings ( :von: ) on a forum such as this, it is surely best that the ideas of a member are communicated in as clear a way as possible. Such clarity is improved by correct use of grammar, spelling and punctuation, whereas mistakes can only lead to confusion.

Furthermore, English has one of the largest vocabularies of any language, and when I see it reduced to the likes of "OMG ur well g0fFik innnit !!!11!1!" I want to scream. (I hasten to add that this sort of text-speak is seldom seen on the Heartland forum, unless used for comedic effect.) That the language of Shakespeare, Milton, and Blake can be reduced to this is surely a matter for shame for all native English speakers.

Lastly, I am amazed at the fluency with which many non-native speakers of English use the language, frequently doing so more correctly than many, or even most natives. I do have some proficiency with some other languages, but I know that I would be simply incapable of following the kinds of discussions that we have here in any language other than English.
FFS!

doesn't look particularly acrimonious to me? in fact, i believe it's called agreeing to disagree. and if you're referring to Thrash Harry's witty(?) rebuttal of markfiend's points then can you please direct your ire appropriately rather than sully my good name. although, for what it's worth, i am totally in agreement with mr fiend on this one. quelle surprise

I know. And I don't.

I just think it's funny. I have to write at work in a certain style and believe me, it has to be perfect, grammatically correct and I have to put technical information into language a layman can understand, as it ends up published, yes published! for the masses to read.

That's why I don't bother here. thats too much like work!

And I rarely take anything on a forum seriously. I'm only here for fun.

whilst i appreciate that dw33b speak is really, really, really annoying, and that it does rankle (sp?) me when people take liberties with the english language, i must admit that i rarely proof read what i write here - neither do i proof read emails between friends. now professional emails or letter etc are a different matter, but on here? f**k it! you all know what i'm getting at 99% of the time

and that is sufficient for me.

now chill people. until teh forum provides you with a real-time spell checker a la (no i dont know how to get the accent above the a, and neither do i care right now) MS Word then i think we'll all just have to lump it

now come one! lighten up ;)

With communication being - in a large proportion - visual (body language, etc) it is actually quite important in a purely written medium to make your point clearly and unambiguously. Otherwise you do run the risk of misinterpretation.

The most important rule here should be: "don't knee-jerk." If something annoys or offends you, just sit back for a few minutes and think "hold on, was it meant that way?" We're missing a whole load of visual subtext on here (and in other non-visual communication media, witness the blazing row I once had with my GF over a misinterpreted text message), and that has to be recognised; everyone should approach the whole thing in as light-hearted and humorous manner as possible. Fun is the name of the game.

Having said that: http://www.geocities.com/the_one_truth_ ... anker.html

(Edit: hmmm, the last bit keeps getting censored. It should be: h_o_w_t_o_w_r_i_t_e_l_i_k_e_a_w_a_n_k_e_r_._h_t_m_l)

I never found Nazis or any reference to them in a supposed 'humourful' context amusing. Maybe it is the cultural context I was brought up in...
But you might consider that putting up an image of Adolf Hitler ath the top of a tread might be offensive to some people.
Oh please, like everyone else said, lighten up. Boohoo, we can't mention the word Nazi, boohoo, they're bad and mean. Geez. While we're at it, why don't we ban the letters A I N and Z from all languages? Maybe that's not enough. Let's ban E H L R T too.

Nowadays everyone needs pampering and comfort and joy and happy thoughts, and fluffy bunnies and rainbows. Yeah, guess what, bad things happen, and i certainly would never not mention them because someone somewhere could possibly be offended.
I expected some understanding of this on these boards certainly considering the outspoken way Andrew has put this across himself
Arrgh, gasp, aahhhhhh, gggglgglg...
You just sounded like a teenage girl saying "but Britney said so mommy"
Sorry, I simply find it quite inappropriate. Certainly as it is Holocaust Memorial Day tomorrow. http://www.holocaustmemorialday.gov.uk
