First single - (I dont care to remember)

First Group - Huey Lewis And The News

Having bought their "Best Of" cd in Tesco's I do have occasions to listen to some great tracks, and I dont mean the stuff from "Fore". Their third album "Sports" was / is much better!

Glad to hear I'm not the only one with a soft spot for HL & TN.
They're something of a guilty pleasure of mine...

Nothing can beat cruising in your car, with the windows wound right down, blasting out to all and sundry 'It's Hip to be Square'!

Having located the remains of my singles collection I can now admit to the following:

1)What was the first record you ever bought?

Tony Christie - (Is This The Way To) Amarillo if lumping your pocket money together with your brothers counts. If not, then all the evidence points to either ELO - Turn To Stone,Wings - Mull Of Kintyre, ELP - Fanfare For The Common Man or Santana - She's Not There. Whichever was earliest - all dated 1977 on the label. Quite a relief really. I was pretty sure it was David Essex - Hold Me Close but that must have just been a bad dream.

2)What was the first 'proper' band you ever got into?

Slade. Of course they were a proper band. I even joined their fan club.

3)Do you still listen to that band today?

Only at Christmas.

Edit: Too many typos for me to let it go.

the first: The Pixies 12" Gigantic/River Euphrates with the excellent Vamos & In Heaven on the flip side. Somewhere along the way, I sold this one... still can't sleep sometimes...

First proper band: The Ramones , they just blew me away back then.

still listen to them? Oh yeah...

The first piece of music I bought and really, really liked was George Michael's "Careless Whisper". I was 11 or 12. From that time and the first proper band I discovered -- which of course were the Sisters -- my mind is blank. Very little matters.

I remember though, listening to A-Ha "hunting High and Low" at a friend's place and since I only knew "Take on me" (that's what was on the radio) I remember asking her "wow, is that really A-Ha? That's good." And I remember Nick Kershaw from the same period. And of course, Duran Duran. The Neo-Romantics. But that was puberty. I was less than 12, surely.

Of all the bands mentioned I only don't listen anymore to George Michael/Wham.

PS: Downloaded Alphaville's "Forever Young" and "Sounds like a melody" the other day. I like it more now than I did then. I may even buy the album, who knows? Life is made of discovery.

3.Too Right.......Best Album of all time............(More or Less)

Dead right, Inflammable Material must be one of the most angry and passionate records ever recorded.

Even now, after nearly three decades i still regularly dig Inflammable Material out, it's classic song after classic song, Suspect Device; Here We Are Nowhere, Alternative Ulster. Wasted Life and the punked-up cover version of of Bob Marley's Johnny Was. Classic stuff :)

Hello

Wrong not Irish - sorry

But looking at that selection I can see why you may jump to such a conclusion

However the mention of Wakefield could be a bit of a clue!

1) Kraftwerk, Tour de France (1983). I was ten. Hey.

2) Proper music? Not sure I ever got that far. The first band where I bought everything, scoured the press for interviews etc was ... The Pet Shop Boys. Hmm. This was 1986. I was thirteen. Hey. The Sisters were just that odd stuff my cousin played at that point, and would remain so for another four years.

3) No. But whenever I hear them on Radio 2, I turn it up and bask in the memories. This is what the music of your childhood is for, surely?
