Ever been a Goth?

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

Oh yeah :)

But it was a well cool scene to be in from 1982 onwards; certainly infinitely preferable to the alternatives, eg metaler or flick.

I did the whole full on Andi Sex Gang / Gavin Friday / Nik Fiend make up thing.

Had a mohican which was generally bleached white but was vaiously red, blue, purple, pink  , zebra stripes etc etc.

Was recently(ish) speaking to Choque at last Octobers Heartland do at the George reminiscing about the many, many Friday nights I spent at The Warehouse where he was the DJ and the soundtrack was predominantly glam - T Rex, Bowie, Steve Harley, Sweet with a mere smattering of that new 'Goth' stuff eg Siouxsie, Cure, Bauhaus, Killing Joke(!) etc etc

The Goth scene that I relate to from those days had more in common with the New Romantics than Punks, although there was a helathy cross-fertilisation of old school punks, psychobillys (Meteors, Guana Batz, Cramps etc), miserabilists and plain old don't-fit-anywhere-elses.

Musical influences were not as prescriptive as they are these days and nor was the dress code.

I got two severe batterings from walking around Leeds 'gothed up' on my way to nightclubs because unlike today, it WAS dangerous to look different. These days the kids hanging out outside the Korn Exchange (@QB - like it :) ) hardly raise an eyebrow - pierced or otherwise - and indeed I reckon you'd have to walk stark naked down Briggate with a thermos flask up your arse to get a second look.

In brief, it was exciting and I had the time of my life.

Last Wednesday was not only an opportunity to see a reasonable performance from a once magnificent force, but also a chance to say 'Hi' to all those people from 20 years and more ago.

Too Cool.

I must dig some old piccies out and bung them up on the Gallery for all to enjoy and laugh at :)
Something pithy.

Quite a bump indeed

Not a goth myself, never was. Actually hardly ever wear black (very occasionally a Sissies tee, but that's about it and once had black pants and a black shirt but that's way back as well and didn't wear it too often). But then I don't feel like having to look like some sort of music I listen to (or do anything else like it, I just grab the best bits of whatever world I feel like I think) - bit connected to the 'Outside the simian flock'-thingy, I presume

I have been known to...

But that was just for a bit of fun.

I'd say I thought I was a goth once upon a time, in the late 80s.
If I told them once, I told them a hundred times to put 'Spinal Tap' first and 'Puppet Show' last.

I was a Goth, albiet with long red hair
skin tight black troosers and pointy winklepickers
I don't get these new goths with the trousers that could house a small nation (God I sound old)
It was a blast while it lasted and fcuk all those that derided the movement :!:

Not really. But only wear black or the colours that go with it. Because it looks best. 8) Regard myself as just an alternative type. My friends certainly aren't goths.

The same could be said of you, but the German army jacket stops any Goth conceptions before sheer gorgeousness is factored in ;D

Actually the closet I've been to goff
was moshing over some that had slammed into the
ladies I was with at a gig in DC.

Nah, Goths are like fine wines. They mature with age...

...and should be kept in bottles in cool cellars.

Ah... no actually, it should have been directed at DerekR. But hey, now you know!
