what sort of image was it?

looking at that line of code, it seems as if it supports jpgs, gifs and pngs

have you tried another avatar from a url?

also, have you tried saving the image to your desktop and uploading it that way?

could you try those 2 things when you get chance and post what happens?

i'll also check the avatar folder permissions...

just trying to eliminate a few options (ie: is it the image's webservers stopping it? is it the correct format, etc etc)

It was the correct format (.gif)

Taking another look, I think the file was too large (KB-wise).

Might be the cause. Though I would have thought there would have been an error message at the top of the page ("This file is too large" or something) rather than a "General Error" page appearing like that.

Ah well.
