the band were all claiming unemployment benefits when the sisters started
they were due to be interviewed by NME/Sounds/Melody Maker or somesuch music paper
however, they realised that Gang of Four had recently been interviewed in one of the music papers and had used their real names. GoF got busted by the DHSS as a result because they were claiming benefits!!
so the sisters decided to adopt aliases

or at least thats the popular story. marx and eldritch have both told the same tail independently of each other, so there's a good chance that this particular piece of sisters mythology is actually true

adams was called "lurch" in early interviews because they hadnt had chance to think of an alias for him, and "lurch" was his nickname at school
marx's alias comes from an old joke between gary, eldritch and claire (eldricth's girlfriend at the time)
apparently when they first met she was always forgetting his name and seemed to think he was called gary. they were always correcting her. i assume the phrase "gary? mark!" came about as a result of that... i seem to recall gary telling me it was actually decided on the way back from a Slade gig

Joe Strummer used to tell a similar story. One of his bands before The Clash were called the London SS... because they were all on Social Security.

Apparently another pun (Bren gun). Can't remember what his real name is tho.ormfdmrush wrote:what's with Ben Gunn?
Craig used the nickname Lurch (or was it Lerch ?) in the early days. See QB's post above.

Sorry but I can't remember where I read it. It might just as well be another of those urban myths.smiscandlon wrote: Really?Ben Gunn is a character in 'Treasure Island'.

@ ormfdmrush : I guess Craig didn't like the nickname and just dropped it as soon as he could.
Edit : the only mention I have of the name Lerch is in some early band photo (I'd say 82). Ben and Craig's names are swapped (Ben's called Lerch and vice versa).

I was sure the erstwhile John Mellor wasn't in The London SS, I now have proof!Nic wrote:Top notchBadlander wrote:Joe Strummer used to tell a similar story. One of his bands before The Clash were called the London SS... because they were all on Social Security.![]()

He probably read a lot of H.P. Lovecraft.ormfdmrush wrote:OK...

As for the Hussey/Lovelock thing? I'm pretty sure Hussey is his real name and the Lovelock name was made up in a jokey/fictitious biography in the Eskimo fanzine.
That's pretty much what I would have guessed too. There's normally never a deep meaning behind these things - he'd probably just read something like At the Mountains of Madness or whatever shortly before, and if there's one thing that most people remember from Lovecraft it's his use of the word "eldritch".Dan wrote:He probably read a lot of H.P. If I told them once, I told them a hundred times to put 'Spinal Tap' first and 'Puppet Show' last.
