Is anyone else not getting images when they view a page? Although I usually get full graphics, sometimes lately I just have been getting the blank box with a red X. Strangely enough, the link within the image tags will show the graphic if I cut and paste it into the address field of my browser.

I've been getting the same thing for some time.
And indeed the image shows if I cut and paste its address, but it also shows (as a ''separate subpage'' if you know what I mean, after which I must click "back" to return to HL) if I just rightclick on it to "show picture" (or "show image", whatever, can't remember the word as I'm at work with a Polish version of Windows now).

Me too. Except on firefox it just comes up as Image rather than the blank box with a red X. But yes, they generally work when I "view image" from the contextual menu (ctrl-click on a Mac rather than right-click)

what sort of images are you missing? the forum skin's buttons and stuff? avatars?
or ones that reside on 3rd party webservers that members have embedded in pages using the [img] tag?

Aye:
Even stuff from places like photobucket, which definitely don't stop external "image-leeching" sometimes fails to show up.

hmmm. strange
i'm not aware of anything happening on the HL webserver that could stop external images being included in the page...
is there any consistency between the images that are missing? i mean, if you view a page with some missing images, and then click off it onto another page, are they still missing when you come back? what about hitting reload/refresh? does that make them appear?
presumably this is not skin-specific? its happening with a variety of different skins, on different browsers and using different ISPs?
does anyone familiar with apache webserver configs know anything that might have been done by the hosting company that could be causing this? i guess it might be possible with .htaccess files but i'm not aware of anything like that being done on our servers. and anyway, wouldnt that effect all 3rd party hosted images?

Sometimes these emoticons don't show :Quiff Boy wrote: is there any consistency between the images that are missing?

But I think this is simply because sometimes the site is down and out. For what reason, I have no idea, but it obviously has nothing to do with HL.
This is not specific to HL either : it can happen on dawnrazor.co.uk as well.markfiend wrote:But yes, they generally work when I "view image" from the contextual menu (ctrl-click on a Mac rather than right-click)

I know .htaccess can block hot-linking to other sites, I'm not sure it can block your site hot-linking to other sites and I don't see why it would make any sense to.

Sometimes it is Photobucket stuff, I also had the odd MarkFiend smilie not showing up...
I'm on the Alice skin, for the record, and use FireFox 2.0.0.1

That might be down to the hosts of markfiend.com -- it sometimes can be a little slow; you get what you pay for, and I'm paying nothing.Izzy HaveMercy wrote:I also had the odd MarkFiend smilie not showing up...

Got it too, bit of an annoyance, Mac or PC, both most recent FF, standard theme (though I do use the right click on my Mac to load images as well
EDIT: Though apparently it just stopped doing that, though it still does left clicks
That'll be warranty stuff then
)
Don't think it's got to do with HL though, seem to remember seeing it happen elsewhere too...

I got it with FF a while back, and clearing my cache did the trick. It originally happened after I did some security tightening on my firewall, then had to do some security loosening cos I couldn't even get out to the web, if that's any help.
If I told them once, I told them a hundred times to put 'Spinal Tap' first and 'Puppet Show' last.
Same here, except for (unfortunately) the browser. Well, I guess that I also use Dr Jeep too.Izzy HaveMercy wrote:I have the occasional picture and smilie not showing as well.
