more pooter help?

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

That's your problem, lol. :P

Well, to be more serious, there's a couple of things that caused me to freeze up.

One was that when I bought my pc I also bought a cd burner and got the shop to fit it as I wasn't confident at that point to fit it myself. After many freezes I discovered the bozo's had obstructed the fan with the ribbon cable. It didn't stop the fan from turning but all the cool air went elsewhere. A few weeks later the motherboard burned out. So if you've had something fitted inside or if you've never looked in the case, make sure the fan isn't onstructed.

Another thing was the dreaded Blue-Screen-Of-Death which I used to get around once a day. Once I moved to broadband I never had another, so it must have been the btopenwound 56k dialup, or just 56k dialup in general which was crap and unstable and did something to make me crash.

Other things to consider are USB devices.. i use to have tons of problems under windows 98 all because of evil USB devices.

You might also want to consider defragging your hard drive, if you have lots of files, small amount of ram, and large swap file that could cause your machine to pause every once in a while.

Also check for evil adware.. not sure if theyd cause your prob, but their EVIL, ;)

Hope this helps:)

hmmm... that's an intriguing one. i upgraded to broadband (drool!) a couple of weeks ago and though i can't be certain (cos i have a memory like a seive) i think these problems may have started at around the same time. my luvverly shiny new broadband modem is (you guessed it) a usb device.

sooooo - is their anyway i can confirm that this is what's causing the problems short of just pulling the plug out? and if this is the cause - what's the problem?

and thanks folks for the other suggestions. my first thought was that their may be some kind of heat problem so i've already had the case off to no avail and i tried to defrag my hard drive but the bloody pooter did it's mr freeze impression halfway through!!!

USB can cause problems. If you have a friend with broadband and a different brand modem try swap and see what happens.

It could also be the drivers/software that came with the device, check the net for upgrades

if its the one that looks like a mantaray (by alcatel) their are uploads available. Their are also some compatability issues with VIA chipset motherboards (AMD processors) which might also be causign the problem,

Like hallucienate said, best thing to do is try a different broadband modem.

or upgrade the drives etc.

Is your broadband service from NTL and not BT - if so I know exactly what the problem is.

The USB modems on the NTL network have a very dodgy drivers disc - it used to cause major problems when first released!

The best solution - if it is a NTL usb modem - would be to install a NIC 10/100mbs Network card - NTL will supply and fit one for about £15.00 - this will stop the modem "F***ing About"

Hope that helps

(BTW before you ask I am EX NTL Tech Support!)

once again - thanks to everyone for their assistance :notworthy: :notworthy:

i've just downloaded and installed latest drivers for my "manta ray" from alcatel so fingers crossed all round. the drivers on the cd supplied by bt appear to be v. 1.4.3 and i just found v. 2.something or other on the alcatel website which looks fairly promising....

a complete reinstall of the operating system would probably sort it. but its a big step, and takes a few hours to do.

other things you could do.. erm, see if their are any programs eating the ram (in task manager), check your other drivers, plead with it.. etc :D

USB is the spawn of the devil - Yopu want Broadband - you gotta use a Network Card - it the "best solution"

As for MAC VS PC - I am a Gamer and PC is the only platform for me!
