why so many references/nods to Cohen?

Got any interesting thoughts on a set of lyrics? Any that don't involve the word "indeed"? Find yourself struggling to decipher all those obtuse references Von makes? Read "1959 And All That" and still no clearer? Nope, us neither. Postcards found lying in a skip around the back of the Chemists can be found here... Don't say you weren't warned.

I've pondered this ever since unsuccessfully nicking 'new skins for the old ceremony' and having to dash through the streets of York in '86...what does Eldritch value in the songs of Leonard Cohen?

I can only conclude that he(Cohen) was a vocal model who speaks as much as singing on his records.

Maybe there are things I'm not aware of...

Seeing what artists Andrew names as favourites Cohen shows up rather often. Probably that's why. Furthermore, Cohen is an excelent musician and lyricist, so there surely will be enough lyrical gems to quote from.
