as for your particular 'problem', i don't think you are switching between visible/hidden
the list of who is online refreshes itself every few minutes, which means that if you stay on one page for more than 5 mins without clicking anything (eg: you're reading a long thread) the system might think you have gone away and so you might not show up on the 'who's online' list when it refreshes itself.
say you then start clicking around again, the system knows you are back, but it doesn't refresh its list for another few mins so for that short period of time you might still not appear on the list.
its really nothing to worry about anyway.
if all else fails, log out, close your browser, delete your cookies and then log back in.
