THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.
Post punk is a much misunderstood period. You read the books and watch the documentaries and many bands get missed out of the story. History has glossed it over and turned it into a musical genre and as much as we love The Fall and Gang Of Four we feel there are a whole bunch of really influential bands who don’t get the credit that they deserve.
...
8. Sisters Of Mercy
They reinvented the drum machine and created a dark music that touched many- just ask Steve Albini who used them as a template for Big Black.

What’s the difference between a buffalo and a bison?

Motorhead post-punk: NO FUCKIN' WAY! NWOBHM or simply classic rock fused with punk speed, PERIOD.
I mean just compare Motorhead with Killing joke, no doubt who are the undisputed leaders of post-punk, even lyrically most PP bands were innovative and diverse not quite like the elder boozy bands who'd often capitalise on their music only to get a good shag every once in awhile or some booze for that matter, NAFF SAID.

Is the author of the blog THE John Robb (of Membranes, Goldblade and Sounds/Channel 4 fame) ? Can't say that many of his list didn't get the credit they deserved - most will still earn a reasonable living from their back catalogue. Good to see someone (posting further down the page) suggesting a link to Legion rather than Westworld as an intro to ToH. The latter used to reduce the dancefloor at the Phono to a turkey-trotting bequiffed minority for its lengthy, repetitious whining, whereas the menacing intro to the former would get some great moshing started, and the surprise ending would always catch a few out !
At least johnrobb's inspired choice of Sisters song will entice more than a few people to investigate the Girls a little further
You know everyone every 5 years or so should listen to Crass. No more than that mind you and perhaps I actually mean 10 years. I recall a gig they played here in Lincoln way back when - I think I'm right in describing it as carnage - I was very drunk.
Five cups of coffee just to be myself...when I'd rather be somebody else

By God, do I love CRASS. The reissues are fantastic; especially Stations.
But yeah, at my age, every 5 years sounds about right.

The most successful tyranny is not the one that uses force to assure uniformity but the one that removes the awareness of other possibilities, that makes it seem inconceivable that other ways are viable, that removes the sense that there is an outside.

Sorry, but this thing about which genre or sub-genre a band belongs to is basically two hairy fleshy sacks that hang between your legs.
It does not matter.
A good band is a good band, and it's completely irrelevant whether they're post-punk, metal, mod, punk, ska, new romantic, NWOBHM, Uzbekistani Arse flute music or whatever.

If I told them once, I told them a hundred times to put 'Spinal Tap' first and 'Puppet Show' last.
I would still maintain that The Sisters, Motorhead et al on Mr Robb's list have had plenty of attention and credit over the years. Other 80s bands such as RLYL, UK Decay, Scars, The Rose of Avalanche, Neon Judgement, The Young Gods, B Movie and (add your own suitable candidates to the list) never get a mention these days.
Are there other forums like this one dedicated to (relatively underground) bands? I'm not talking about megabands that every man and his dog would know of - but bands like TSOM that are a fairly specialised audience.

First of all- . Second- agree, categorization is job for musicologists or for

Yes,but in their case "occult music",translates as "what bands that want to be the Fields Of The Nephilim" are you listening to?
"I've seen Andrew Eldritch in an ice hockey shirt onstage, and I've given him the benefit of the doubt"
Tom G Warrior of Celtic Frost

Aye, and 90% of the posts are from a Spanish fantasist with a ridiculous made up pseudonym (not that there's anything wrong with that, you understand ) who clearly fancies himself as some sort of gothic overlord
