Veteran journalist Paul Foot dies

Campaigning journalist Paul Foot has died aged 66.
The former Private Eye, Daily Mirror and Guardian journalist was known for his left-wing politics and campaigns against miscarriages of justice.

I just read that notice in the paper too

Remember when journalists actually fought for their opinions? When they recognised that they had a duty to perform, and to give people a voice that they might not otherwise have had?

Now, there is a journalist I will miss...so easy to be flippant in these times
he told the truth as he saw it .....RIP

I always found Club International lived up to its reputation. No question.

I'm vaguely disappointed by that. I was kind of hoping it was something like the Provident book. As in "the women from the Provie's here to collect her money"

you're closest Mrs. S, aforementioned 'book' is any of the major pay by installments door jamming affairs that are/were prevalent on Council estates

Now I'm older, and supposedly in charge of my own finances, I think the interest rates on those types of "books" are appalling. Quite apart from the way they sell consumerism as an escape from reality. Dont get me started...

True story: When I was young, My Mum and Dad's phone number was pretty similar to Damart's (one number different IIRC) and they always used to get lots of phone calls for Damart. One day when I was still living there, I answered the phone to a Damart customer, and took an order for some thermals. I pretended to write down all the old dear's details and everything. What a hoot I thought it was. The poor thing is probably still wondering why they never came.
