For more personal stuff from my formative years, songs by T'Pau (especially 'Heart and Soul' and 'China in your Hand') remind me of being dumped by my first girlfriend at 14, and still sometimes invoke that old twisting feeling in the pit of my stomach, if not actual tears.

I find Voltaire's 'Where's The Girl' quite poignant, for other reasons.

No doubt there are others.

I have to say one thing, after last weekend, about Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Divison.

For a good while now I've found that song really painful to listen to for a number of reasons and memories it conjured up... In spite of the fact that I love Joy Division, a lot of their stuff just cuts too close to the bone. But after having such a fine time as it was being played at JH De Moeve on Sat night it now has a better association for me.

As I was dancing away to it I was thinking this to myself... that song usually does worse than make me cry. But now all it's doing is making me dance.

Hi tearful folks.

'Emma' - Sisters of Mercy is pretty harsh - creates a knot somewhere in my gut with the sheer sense of loss, but has never made me cry.

For that, I tend to need:

'Teenage Wristband' by Twilight Singers (because once your time is gone, it's never coming back. Try and grab it as it slips through your fingers).

'Surfboy' by Underworld. Fall asleep to 'Dubnobasswithmyheadman' and guarantee I will wake up crying to that one.

'Once in a Lifetime' by Talking Heads.

Yay! Have just been inspired to dig out old 'Underworld' album - not all bad.

BTW JD's Still live album still does it for me, it just gets deeper and harder and more painful as the gig progresses and then you realise it was their last ever gig. by the time it gets to decades, thats it, im all over the floor!
(does anyone know if there is a longer version than the 11 track vinyl available? id love to hear if there was any more from this gig, ie between 24hrs & transmission?)

I have that with Eva Cassidy's version of 'Fields of Gold', as I'm sure I already mentioned a few posts back in this thread. I could be all happy and the song comes on and I start balling my eyes out. True story : when I drove home last Friday evening from grocery shopping, a car in front of me had a sticker saying 'Yes, another Eva Cassidy Fan'. I swear, it made me think of her Fields of Gold and I got all teary eyed!

The original version passed me by somewhat but Vons anguished screams at the end do indeed hit the mark....

I think it's the music and the lyrics combined that makes one's empathy of someone else's emotions and feelings at that given moment where you as a listener can make a link with personal feelings felt before or at one given moment. I have seen this kind of passion on the dance floor, and not only the goth evenings, but the house raves as well as the moments in everyday life when a song is played and just simple eye contact is made with someone else that just loves a certain song because of the emotional value involved...those questions we want answered or just that feeling we get sometimes....
