First and Last and Always on 4 vinyls

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

That's a great idea - hope that this set does well for them.

It is a great idea but call me old-fashioned. Why not release a new album? And package it how they want? Instead of re-packaging the classics over, and over, again. :?

"To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the band’s debut album ‘First and Last and Always’ we are releasing a fantastic 4LP vinyl boxset compiling the initial 1984-85 WEA period when the band were arguably at their best. The boxset will feature the original album, cut from the original production masters, as well as three additional LPs of b-sides from the era all on 180gm black vinyl packaged together in a card slipcase."

If the bit about using the original production masters is true then this should be pretty special. How do I buy it?

Yes, that would make this very special indeed. Wonder if that includes the b-sides?

Lost in translation - if these discs are to be cut from the 1984/5 stampers then how can they be remastered?

Right, whishful thinking then.. they will be reprinted anyway (from the original masteres?) so hopefully there will be some sound improvements compared to the releases from 84/85 and the reprints from the 90s.

If it actually is 4 records, as opposed to 4 sides, then hopefully it'll be cut at 45 RPM. However, if it is indeed 4 records then it won't use original production masters as they were prepared for 1 LP (2 sides).

The four records would appear to have the eight sides labelled A-H in the OP. Although it claims to be four LPs, it would appear from the content to be one LP (at 33 and a third rpm) and three 12" singles at 45rpm, and I would not get any hopes that it is anything other than basically a belated attempt to cash in on the 30th anniversary with a rehash of what we already own.

I've dropped a line to Diverse Vinyl to see if they will stock it, if I get a reply I'll post it here.

Yes, just looks like an LP and three 12" singles.
If it's from the original stampers won't they be worn and so be inferior to the original?

It depends how many times the stampers were used. If we just look at the Alsdorf pressings for example, there are at least 3 iterations of Side A (A3, A6, A7) but only one Side B (B2). In the right conditions, a stamper can be good for up to 10,000 pressings and they can be re-used many years later if properly preserved.

The phrase "cut from the original production masters" is probably misleading. It should mean exactly that, cut using the original stampers, as that's what "production masters" implies. However it could potentially refer to the EQ'd dub (aka Cutting Master) tape, if such a tape exists. If the label (who I've never heard of, btw, and I buy a lot of new vinyl) were using the master tapes then they'd be very clear about that.

Because this release almost certainly has nothing to do with the band.

One never knows. Maybe they are using your wonderful needledrops ...

Anyway, I'll rather invest that money in seeing them live again in real time ... ;D ...

I'm excited about this. The original European LP is fairly weedy sounding. The MFSL remaster went some way to rebalancing the EQ but they used the JPN mixes. Hopefully we will finally get the definitive F&L&A on vinyl.

In my opinion this goes too far, and will not offer anythin new. Afterhours undistorted?

The only new thing this offers is a complete package of the contemporary B-sides (though really all this means is the B+S 12") for the first time. Could, and should have been done ages ago already. Still if it happens to be the best sounding version of the album yet I'll be giving it a go.

No it doesn't.
As far as I know & looking at my collection B&S was already released, as were the other B sides all on vinyl.
Cheers.

Lets see
Depends how you look at it. If it's cut all analogue and is pressed well with good QC then it offers us the chance to buy the records As New. No more second hand disappointments.

I like the idea.

The Floodland one should be quite popular I think. :P
