Alice

Got any interesting thoughts on a set of lyrics? Any that don't involve the word "indeed"? Find yourself struggling to decipher all those obtuse references Von makes? Read "1959 And All That" and still no clearer? Nope, us neither. Postcards found lying in a skip around the back of the Chemists can be found here... Don't say you weren't warned.

Thanks, Jürgen. It also took me 22 years to realize this, so it had better be a good train of thought, mhehe... ;D

It's always "dressed to kill" isn't it?
Yep. The song always changes "Alice in her party dress, thanks you kindly, so serene" to "Alice in her party, dressed to kill, she thanks you, turns away" the second time the pre-chorus kicks in.
Hmm... *relistens to Some Girls... version*

I am not entirely sure and it may sound a little nit-picky, but shouldn't it be:
"Tell her where the sunshine's bright"

With "bright" being an adjective and all.

not if sun is the noun and shine is the verb :?: ;)

and nit-picky is what the lyrics section is about

but correct grammar would be tell her where the sun shines brightly -- it's an adverb qualifying the verb 'shines'.

There's been a lot of talk in this thread about religion. Presumably this stems from the tarot line as nothing else even comes close - but Tarot cards aren't used in any religion and have no real association with one. They're used in fortune telling and are otherwise just decorative playing cards but there's no religious connection at all. The association with the crystal in the song (and the use of the word "spread") make clear that it's a reference to fortune telling and probably, in the popular imagination, to the occult in general.
Any more of that and we'll be round your front door with the quick-setting whitewash and the shaved monkey.

Because Go Ask Alice includes profanity as well as relatively explicit references to runaways, drugs, sex, and rape, conservative parents, activists, and in at least one alleged case a state governor (Sarah Palin, AK)[5] have sought to remove it from school libraries.

I read an interview where he said the line "Pass the crystal/Spread the tarot/In Illusion comfort lies" was a comment on how black magic is little more than a substitute for intelligence/intelligent comments...summat along those lines.

Tarot and crystal balls are just devices used by occult practitioners to help with their natural intuition and divination. A lot of wiccans use tarot in this way. Tarot, the I Ching, chicken entrails, they're all used for similar purposes.

It's not entirely appropriate to lump it all in with 'black magic'.

However if there is the chance that Eldritch is misinformed about this, then it will be reflected in his lyric writing.

maybe he chose to lump them together because of his disdain for such things...

Ah, I see. So he is an atheist? No belief system - nothing other than the tangible? (nb that's not pejorative - I'm mangling this but I hope you get my drift). Apologies but I know nothing of his views on the subject.

i don't know, but as far as i can tell he's never been anything other than mocking/critical* about the occult, religious extremism, and the more novelty of mainstream religions (such as creationism).

* delete as approriate

i get the impression that religion (be it organised, mainstream or fringe) just doesn't figure into the equation.

he seems a very secular person, more concerned with humanistic matters that have a direct impact on the individual and on society to be bothered about nonsense notions of godhead or the divine

note his attitudes to animal welfare vs human welfare...
